Yangtze Barrier...Step aside...the USS Monocacy has arrived!
The annual springtime trip down the Yangtze for overhaul at Shanghai was timed to coincide with rising water through the Three Gorges. USS Panay (PR-5), 1928 Yangtze Patrol Gunboat, 1:192 scale resin kit
Panay is the only one of "the new six" Yangtze Patrol gunboats available in a kit. Dennis says the resin kit with photo etch parts by Iron Shipwright that will yield a 12" model has poor instructions, but he's undeterred as always. Perstare et Praestare- persevere and excel, aka, don't let lousy instructions stop you.

Maybe “The Sand Pebbles” production company never found a photo and that’s why the fictional USS San Pablo looks as much like the Yangtze Patrol river patrol gunboats USS Palos (PG-16) and her sister-ship USS Monocacy (PG-20) as she resembles the Spanish-built Villalobos, the declared inspiration for Richard McKenna’s Yangtze Patrol ...

Here is the USS Villalobos toward the end of her career on the Yangtze. Ironically, it was supposedly tales from the Villalobos pre –WWI days that inspired Richard McKenna to write the novel. Mckenna merely updated it by having San Pablo operate during the 1926-27 Nationalist Army advance through China.
